Effect of Bladder Volume on Plasma Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide Levels in Dog Penis and Bladder Induced by Pelvic Nerve Stimulation


Abstract
It is well known that pelvic nerve stimulation induces penile erection and bladder contraction and increases vasoactive intestinal polypeptide(VIP) release from the penis and bladder. In the recent studies, VIP might be a neurotransitter
responsble
for
penile erection and relaxation of bladder muscle.
To investigate the influence of the bladder filling on the release of VIP in the penis and bladder, we measured the VIP levels fromthe penis and bladder during filled and emptied states of bladder after in vivo electrical stimulation of pelvic
nerve in
dogs.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. Following pelvic nerve stimulation, the intracavernosal pressure was increased after a distinct delay and reached to maximal pressure. There was no significant difference between the pressure of bladder filled and bladder-emptied groups.
2. Intravesical pressure was increased rapidly by pelvic nerve stimulation but decreased quickly to a steady level clearly below the peak response during stimulation and returned to control level with cessation of stimulation.
3. The VIP releases from the penis were significantly increased in both bladder-filled and bladderemptied groups after pelvic nerve stimulation(P<0.05), but the increased VIP releases were not significantly different between two groups.
4. The VIP releases from the bladder were also significantly increased in both bladder-filled and bladder-emptied groups after pelvic nerve stimulation(P<0.05), but not significantly different between two groups.
In conclusion, the increased VIP releases form the penis and bladder after pelvic nerve stimulation seems to act as a neurotransmitter for penile erection and relaxation of bladder and the bladder filling may not have influence on the VIPergic
neurotransmitter mediated penile erection and relaxation of bladder.
